Daksha’s daughter, Sati, was married to the god Shiva against his wishes. Daksha organized a great yajna, but left Sati and Shiva out of the invitation list. However, Sati still went to the event uninvited. There, Daksha ignored her and spoke badly of Shiva. Unable to handle the embarrassment, Sati jumped into the sacrificial fire and killed herself. Even in death, Sati’s body would not burn. Shiva (as Virabhadra) then killed Daksha for being responsible for Sati’s death. He resurrected Daksha afterwards and forgave him. The wild, grief-stricken Shiva wandered the universe with Sati’s corpse.
According to the story, the god Vishnu dismembered the body of Sati into 51 parts. Each part became a Shakti Pitha, which is a temple to a form of the Goddess. Shiva is also worshipped at each Shakti Pitha, in the form of Bhairava. Bhairava is the male counterpart or guardian of the presiding goddess of the Pitha. It is believed that Sati’s eye or earring fell at Varanasi, establishing Vishalakshi as a Shakti Pitha. However, if you ask at the temple there today, the priest and others will say that the body part that fell was her face.
