Banaras, also known as Varanasi, is one of India’s most holy pilgrimage centers and the oldest city of the country. Located an Uttar Pradesh in northern India on the Ganges river (also known as the Ganga), Banaras has been recognized for its spiritual connect with Hindu theology since the first century CE. Due to its importance to Hindus, it is also called Kashi, which loosely translates to “the luminous city.”
Varanasi is one of the most ancient and interesting cities on the planet. It was first settled more than 3,000 years ago, around 2,500 BCE by members of the Aryan race in the middle Ganges valley, Today Varanasi is a sort of crossroad for two popular religions – Hinduism and Buddhism – with their respective philosophies and has become a thriving commercial and industrial centre as well. Not only that, but it’s famous for its production of silk fabrics, perfumes and for its lovely wooden art! Who knew? And did you know that Varanasi is also known for being one of the birthplaces of Buddhism itself? That’s right. The Buddha is believed to have given his first sermon here in Varanasi!
